GoldToken Netiquette

"Netiquette" stands for "Internet Etiquette", and refers to the set of practices created over the years to make the Internet experience pleasant for everyone. Like other forms of etiquette, netiquette is primarily concerned with matters of courtesy in communications. The following sections provide more information.

1.) Netiquette Basics

• Help the newbies
• Research before asking
• Remember emotion

1.) Netiquette Basics

New users on GoldToken are sometimes called "newbies". Everybody was a newbie once. It is considered to be very good netiquette to share your knowledge and help others who ask questions on the boards, in clubs, and by messages, thereby passing on some of the knowledge you have gained through your experience here. Help the newbies as you wish you were helped.

Research Before Asking

People on the Internet often get far more email and messages than they can deal with. As a common courtesy to do your part to minimize this on GoldToken, you should always check the [ Info ] pages (located at the bottom of your game sheet) for the answer to a question before posting on the boards. If it turns out that the question was easily obtainable in an obvious place, you may annoy the other person and embarrass yourself by throwing in an unrelated answer.

Remember Emotion

Don't use capitals unnecessarily -- it designates shouting, and is considered rude, as in the following:

• I THINK THE FACTS PROVE THIS POINT.

For those with visual difficulties, the use of capitals is the wrong way to help visibility as it makes reading far more difficult for everyone else. Instead, be considerate by learning how to: [ Enlarge Text in Your Web Browser ].

If you want to emphasize a word, use stars or underlines sparingly.

• I think the facts **prove** this point.
• I think the facts prove this point.

You can use smileys sparingly to signal emotions like smiles, winks, sadness, surprise, etc.

• I wish I'd read this before! ;-)
• I wish I'd read this before. :o(

Remember that subtle emotions and meanings do not transmit very well over messages and posts. Satire and humor is particularly hard to transmit, and sometimes comes across as rude and contemptuous. Particularly avoid sarcasm, which rarely communicate well. Similarly, don't over-react to messages or posts you see on the boards. What looks to you like an insulting or mean message may only be an absent minded and poor choice of phrasing, and not meant the way you perceived it.

Be particularly polite when disagreeing with others. Wherever possible, acknowledge good points made, and then respectfully describe the areas where you disagree to produce the most productive conversation.

2.) Netiquette Posting

The following rules of netiquette apply to the sending and posting of messages.

Be Brief

Be brief. It takes considerable time and effort to read long messages. If you receive a lot of messages, and a lot of them are long, then it is likely that you won't be able to read them all. You can do your part to reduce this workload by using brevity to maximize clarity.

This rule is less absolute on the boards, and much less so again for clubs, since the obligation to read these messages is correspondingly less.

Use White Space

Use white space to enhance readability. The more you have to say, the more important this is. Put a blank line at the beginning of messages, so that when they are read by someone the message will have some blank space between it and the header.

A blank line between paragraphs greatly helps readability. This page is a good example. Thoughts and ideas are broken up to make reading and understanding it easier.

Put a URL on a separate line, and indented a couple of spaces. It makes it stand out on it's own, like this below:

Use Descriptive Subject Lines

What with work, friends, mailing lists, and spam, many people get more email and messages than they can easily read. You can greatly help potential readers remember what your message is about, and decide whether or not to read it, with a descriptive subject line.

The subject line is one of the only fields displayed in a message. A short, meaningful subject is the most useful element of information when one wants to identify an message's purpose at a glance. Some examples of ambiguous and meaningful subjects are provided below.

Stay On-Topic

Never post off-topic messages, not related to the main subject in the thread you are posting to. This takes judgment, and you should ask yourself a basic question: is this posting likely to be of interest to this group or topic, or is there another forum that is more appropriate? You might get a better response by searching for a group or forum more directly applicable to your message.

Trolling is the act of posting a message highly off-topic or otherwise calculated to arouse controversy and hopefully cause a flame war. The best response to a troll's posting is no response, to recognize the purpose and ignore the bait. Additional information on troll control is found on this wiki: [ Trolling ]

Avoid Flaming

/"There is a problem with this brave new world in that a lot of people don't appreciate there's another human being at the other keyboard. Flaming is a real problem -- especially on public forums. This is all a new facet of modern technology as well. People rarely trade insults in real life like they do on Internet. There's a tendency to stereotype your opponent into categories."/

/"This more on Internet forums than any place else. This somewhat based on maturity -- a lot of folk on the Internet are students who aren't paying for their time on the system. Mature adults are normally slightly older, not so hot-headed and are paying for their time."/

Flaming is the act of sending someone an outrageously insulting message, whether by private message or in a public forum, usually because someone disagrees with something some else have said. A good flame mixes a razor sharp wit with a devastating put-down so that the other person will only make themselves look silly if they dare disagree -- "The absurdity of your ideas is exceeded only by the incoherence of your remarks, beginning with..."

Some people support and encourage the use of flaming to enforce good netiquette, but it rarely has this effect. A flame can sometimes be funny, and may feel good to the sender, but should be resisted whenever possible. A flame can give the impression that you are unable to respond with more reasonable language, and can genuinely hurt the other person. In general, you should take a disagreement with another user to private messaging, and into a civil and personal exchange between the two of you, letting others carry on with the discussion. Also, keep in mind the considerable limitations on accurate communication of emotion in a text medium.

3.) Netiquette Of Confidentiality

Don't Publicize Other People's Email Addresses or Personal Information:

Don't distribute other people's email addresses or personal information to strangers by email or by posting messages to forums, unless the email is on a public work and obviously intended for distribution. Otherwise, you may be responsible for someone getting spam email from commercial sites, strange email from unwanted strangers, or worse!

Never Share What You Don't Read:

Never post, forward an email you haven't read, or send someone an attachment you haven't examined. Many people have been badly embarrassed by forgetting this rule, and the page, email or attachment turned out to contain information they really shouldn't have forwarded or posted.

Remember Archiving:

Remember that many players save copies of messages, posts from the public boards and even some clubs archive information. It is actually fairly common to copy and paste received messages to use as reference point later. If you aren't prepared to have your words archived and recalled at a later time, then don't send or post the message. This is especially important to remember if your message contains information about third parties.

Game Of The Month

December's game of the month is Skat! Join us in a fun Double Elimination Tournament by signing up today for The December 2014 - Game of the Month - Skat Tournament!


Skat made simple (Simpler, maybe)

There are 4 phases in a skat game, 

1. Bidding
2. Declaring
3. Play
4. Scoring

1. Bidding

Bidding happens. The first player must bid , and others either match bid , raise or pass. The game will give you which option you are allowed. Match bid means you will take over the high bid. So if your opponent has bid 18, and you match, if they pass your bid of 18 will win rather than the original bid

You are bidding on hand value, not on number of tricks or points in your hand

Bidding happens until there is a winner.

Only the bidding winner can gain or lose game points. Not winning the bid your score will not change no matter what happens in the hand

2. Declare

This is where the bid winner sets the type of hand to be played.

You can pick a suit for trumps ( suit + jacks are trump) , grand contract ( just jacks are trumps) ,
null (misere lose all tricks)

There is 2 cards in the Skat. You get option to take the cards or not look at them.

If you take the cards, you can then discard any two cards you like. The points in the skat count towards declarers total

If you don't take the cards, then you get some other options (to declare schneider 90 points, shwartz (all points) , oevert (your opponent can see your cards)

Now, you win the hand by winning 61 game points ( or 90 or all tricks if declare those other options) and
hand value is higher than your winning bid.

If you win , you get hand value game points. Note hand value is bigger than your bid value. I had a bid value of 40, but hand value of 144, so I got 144 game points from that hand )

If you lose, you lose points 2 * hand value or 2 * bid value which every is larger

Thus overbidding can cost you a lot of points.

3. Play

•You must follow suit if you can, if you can't follow suit you can play any card.
•Trumps will beat non trumps. Highest trump wins, Otherwise highest card of led suit wins
•Jack of clubs > jack of spades > jack of hearts > jack of diamonds > ace of trumps
•Winner of trick leads next trick
•Object is to win points of cards in your trick (Ace worth 11, 10 worth 10, King with 4, Queen worth 3, Jack worth 2) Winning 9 8 or 7 is worth nothing to you
•Jacks are always trumps except if Null bid was declared
•10 beats Kings, and loses to Ace except if Null bid where they are normal between jack and 9
•The declarer is playing against the other 2. The other 2 should be trying to stop declarer getting the win condition

4. Scoring

The game is scored automatically for you , and depending on whether you achieve the winning condition the bid winner gains or lose points. These points are based on game value, not bid value

If you go below -200 game points, you lose, If you get to 200 game points you win
If there is no winner or loser, another hand is started - go to phase 1

Game value for null is 23, not taking skat null is 35 , if you open your cards null is 46.
There are no multipliers for null games.

Game value (except for null) is determined by Base * Multipliers

Multipliers are at least 2 (the rules say tops + multipliers - both are at least 1)

Base is dependent on suit you bid Clubs = 12, Spades = 11, Hearts = 10, Diamonds = 9, Grand contract = 24.

Thus if you want to declare clubs, then bidding (phase 1 above) 24 would be ok, however if you want to bid Diamonds, then 18 is ok. If you want to bid grand contract, then 48 is a safe bid.

Because grand contract is worth so many more points, if you hand supports it , it is probably better to declare that.

Now you can get extra multipliers by having high trumps or not having trumps. If you have the two highest trumps (jack of clubs AND jack of spades) your multiplier goes up by 1. If you have 3 highest trumps ( jack of clubs, jack of spades AND jack of hearts) your multiplier goes up by 2. etc etc
If you are missing the two highest trumps , your multiplier also goes up the same, but it becomes harder to win the required points in tricks

The other way your multiplier goes up, if you win 90 points you get extra multiplier, or an extra 2 if you win all trick.
It is therefore always better to win 90 points rather than just 61 alternatively if your opponents can win 90 points, you will lose more points

If you decided not to take the skat, then the multipliers higher, and can be much higher depending on what other options you choose. These are in the rules

Next

Now, having read this nugget, I suggest you read it one more time. That way you understand about phase 4 when you are reading about phase 1.

When you play initially if you don't understand the terminology, then refer to this nugget and the rules.

What I do each hand is to calculate my probably game value (section 4 above and more details in the rule) which depends on how many multipliers, so I know what sort of bid value that I can do.

Another small tip I have is that if you are forced to bid (ie first player to bid each hand) and your hand is not likely to win any bids then bidding null limits your loss to 46 points and you can live to play another hand, while bidding Diamonds can potentially lose 36 points, but if things go bad with multipliers (e.g. you have no jacks) then you can lose many many more points.

Best Recipe Contest

November's winner is: Turkey Tetrazzini

Turkey Tetrazzini

Ingredients
•8 ounces thin spaghetti, broken into 3-inch lengths, cooked, rinsed, and drained
•1 1/2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese, divided
•1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, divided
•2 to 3 cups diced cooked turkey
•2 tablespoons diced pimientos, if desired
•1 tablespoon butter
•4 ounces sliced mushrooms
•1/4 chopped cup onion
•1 can cream of mushroom soup
•1/2 cup chicken broth
•1/4 cup dry sherry
•salt and pepper, to taste

Preparation

Combine spaghetti with 1 cup Cheddar cheese and half of the Parmesan cheese. Add turkey and pimientos. In a skillet, melt butter and sauté mushrooms and onions just until tender; add to the turkey mixture along with remaining ingredients. Gently stir to combine ingredients; place in a greased casserole and sprinkle with remaining cheeses. Cover with lid or foil and bake at 350° for about 45 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.
Serves 6 to 8.

We would like to say to sandi en margarita for letting us step into their personal life for a bit.



1. What brought you to GoldToken?

a friend star4kitty was playing on the other site I played on and suggested I play here! I loved it right away and made the monetary switch as soon as I could!

How'd you choose your name for GT?

I live on the island of MARGARITA so it was easy to identify me.

2. What interests you most on GT?
Your all time favorite game here?

I love word games, CROSSDOWNS has the best dictionary. I am a photographer so I love the photo contests! It's between Hangman & Crossdowns as far as my favorite games is concerned.

3. Do you belong to any of the clubs?

I joined the Debate club but I don't debate well!

4. What State or Country do you reside in?

I live in Venezuela on the island off the northern coast called Margarita, We have about 350,000 year-round residents and during the holy weeks we have a lot of visitors here on vacation enjoying our duty-free status.

What in your State or Country do you think tourist should definitely see?

We have on the island an excellent Marine museum, and a national park for hiking, lots of beaches for surfing and kite surfing and lots of casinos. Shopping used to be a great bargain but over the past several years the country's economy has tanked!!

Do you live in the City or Country?

I live in a small city but am 3 blocks from the Caribbean Sea!

5. What hobbies to you have?
What other interests do you have?

Outside of word games I like to read and to walk, not power walking but steady walking to pass time in the mornings.

Grandchildren?
I have 7 grand children and tho I haven't met them I have 2 great-grand children who live in NY state.

7. Do you work? If so what kind of work do you do?
Do you enjoy your job?

I am a retired American. I worked in the US Virgin Islands on St Thomas for 12 1/2 years and worked for jewelry shops and other tourist shops. I enjoyed the $!

8. Any pets?

I have 2 cats. 1 is a Virgin Islands cat, missi, & she is 13, and Preciosa is a Margarita Siamese-ish cat and she's 4 (I think!) They both came to me as wee kittens.

9. Are you under 30?___ 30 to 50? ___ or over 50?

I am 72 and aging well! Like fine wine! A female who likes hammers & nails!

10. What's the farthest you've been from home?
Was it a vacation or for business?

For my 60th birthday I took myself to Bali, Indonesia for a month and ADORED IT!!!

11. If you could be anywhere right now where would that be?

If I could twitch my nose and be anywhere on the planet, I'd love to go back to Bali, but then I have never been to Athens, Greece or Istanbul, Turkey, both are on my bucket list!!

12. Favorite season?

My favorite season is summer which is what I have here 365 days a year! But we only have sun for 350 of those days!
