Posted by Balrog on 14 Jul 2025 at 10:24AM I really like the idea of hybrid cars -- why should the engine idle when one is stopped or going at low speed? Such a great idea. I do like the idea of being able to fuel up less often. A friend has a dual hybrid/electric car; in my mind, the best of both worlds - most of his driving is relatively close, so he can use the electric motor for about 80% of his driving. This means that a tank of gas lasts him over 2,000 miles. An co-worker once sneeringly pointed out that in hybrid or dual hybrid/electric cars, the extra cost is not covered by the savings in gasoline. But I'm still in awe of my friend only needing to get gasoline so infrequently. I wouldn't like an electric car; certainly not for distance travel: you'd run out of power, and then be trapped at the recharge station for hours waiting for a recharge. At least with gasoline engines, you can be on your way in a few minutes.
